What Is An IB & What is the difference between an IB & A Partner?

Both partners and IBs are considered partner types but refer to different levels of partnership. Everyone starts as a trading partner and becomes an IB once certain criteria are met.

Introducing Broker IB

IBs make recommendations or signals while delegating the task of executing trades to someone who is a trader in the market. In easier terms, an introducing broker (IB) acts as a middleman by matching an investor seeking access to markets, willing the other side of the transaction. The introducing broker and whoever executes a transaction split the fees and commissions according to some agreed-upon arrangement.

Introducing brokers play the same role in the futures markets as stockbrokers do in the equities markets. However, they are regulated by different authorities. Stockbrokers are registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and are regulated by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA).1 Future introducing brokers are registered with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and regulated by the National Futures Association (NFA).2

Introducing brokers help increase efficiency and lower the workload for futures commission merchants. The arrangement allows for specialization where the IB focuses on the client while the FCM focuses on trading floor operations.

Difference Between IB & Partner Status

IBs not only have higher requirements than trading partners but they have also rewarded a greater share of the commission. Other than the specific benefits of being an IB, there is little functional difference between partners and IBs. You can also lose IB status, but you can never lose partner status.
